Community Passenger Transport Service to Continue

11 February 2015

A Red Cross passenger service will take over from Council’s Community Bus Passenger Service.

Following a six month trial, Council decided this week to not continue the service due to the very low number of people using the service.

“I’m pleased that, although the Council funded Community Passenger Bus program will not continue beyond its six month trial period, negotiations have resulted in an uninterrupted service due to a Red Cross taking on the weekly run,” Mayor Peter Gandolfi said.

Low passenger numbers during the trial period has resulted in the Wattle Range Council making the decision at its meeting on Tuesday night to cease its weekly bus service at the conclusion of its six month trial in mid-March in favour of a Red Cross service.

Passengers will however be able continue to travel to Mount Gambier on Mondays with the Red Cross Social Support Program subsidised by Home and Community Care (HACC).

The alternative program will run a van departing from Millicent on Monday mornings at 10.15 am to return from Mount Gambier at approx. 2.45 pm. This service is expected to be operational by March.

Travel to Mount Gambier on a Monday will cost users $5 and bookings are essential and can be made by contacting the Millicent Visitor Information Centre on (08) 8733 0904 by no later than 4.00 pm on the Sunday prior.
