Mulch Days Initiative Success

19 December 2017
Wattle Range Mayor Peter Gandolfi said a total of 11 Community Mulch Days were held throughout May to November this year providing more than 700 loads of free mulch to 330 customers.
The free mulch is as a result of the Wattle Range Council recycling green waste at its waste transfer stations.
“The program has provided significant savings for Council while providing a service to the community,” Mr Gandolfi said.
“With the operating costs involved in transporting and disposal of the processed green waste at the regional composting facility reduced, the reuse of this material as garden mulch is a positive outcome for our ratepayers and the environment.”
In 2016, Council staff trialled free access to mulch for residents and community groups.  Following a successful trial, the program was expanded to include monthly Community Mulch Days at Millicent and bi-monthly at Penola.
Council accepts green waste at the Millicent and Penola Resource Recovery Centres and the Beachport Waste Transfer Station.  This material has always been mulched and was previously used in the capping of the now retired Canunda Landfill. Following the conclusion of this project, Council began to use the product in low contact parks and gardens across the district.
With almost 17,000 cubic metres of the mulch made between November 2016 and September 2017, the supply far exceeded the demand.
Residents and community groups were invited to bring a trailer or a small truck, a tarp and personal protective equipment to receive free mulch.  Council staff operated a loader over a four hour period, when residents could take as many loads as they can manage.
The program has received positive feedback from the wider community and Council plans to continue offering the service in Autumn 2018.
In the meantime, a store of mulch will be available from time to time, for self-loading at Council’s Millicent, Penola and Beachport waste facilities.
