Community to get update on coastal strategy

6 March 2019

Implementation of the Southend Adaptation Strategy is under way and Wattle Range Council has opened an invitation to interested members of the community for an update on progress. An information session will be held at the Southend Community Club on Thursday, 14 March at 6.30pm. A light supper will be provided.

“This is a great opportunity for the local community to hear about the progress that has been made since the Southend Adaptation Strategy was adopted by Council in April 2018,” said Mayor Des Noll.

The information session will provide an overview of the recommendations of the award-winning strategy and how Council has been implementing these actions. The community will also be asked to put forward suggestions for modelling.

“Council is currently preparing tender documents for the collection of wave and current data for Rivoli Bay,” Mayor Noll said.

The data will form the basis of a numerical model for the townships of Beachport and Southend. The model will help to inform decision making around coastal infrastructure and provide a scientific basis for future investment.

The Southend Adaptation Strategy was developed through a combination of community workshops and technical advice in late 2017. Implementation of the Southend Adaptation Strategy commenced in May 2018, including writing to State Government, advocating for action, data collection and temporary beach access works.

The Southend Adaptation Strategy project was recognised at the Premier’s Climate Change Awards in November 2018, winning the Government section as well as the major prize. The $10,000 cash prize is being used to collect further information about the coastal processes in Rivoli Bay. The Strategy is available on Council’s website at www.wattlerange.sa.gov.au/coastalmanagement.

Those wishing to attend the information session next week are asked to RSVP for catering purposes to engineering@wattlerange.sa.gov.au or by phoning (08)8733 0901.
