Great Vic Bike Ride

On Saturday, 23 November approximately 4,500 cyclists will arrive in Millicent for an overnight stop-over as part of the 2019 Great Vic Bike Ride. Although this event has been running for over 30 years, the GVBR is venturing into South Australia for the first time. The event begins in Robe with participants pedalling their way through the Limestone Coast and along the Great Ocean Road to their ultimate destination in Torquay, Victoria. With riders having the option to select either a 5-day ride or 10-day ride on this fully supported event, they’re also expected to be accompanied by up to 500 supporters and volunteers along the way. This therefore provides a fantastic opportunity for our local communities to benefit from this event.

 GVBR participants are a mixed of young and old, with approximately 40 per cent of the riders being school students who are likely to be followed along the way by friends and family. It’s estimated that most participants will spend on average $50 per day, which equates to a significant financial benefit for local businesses and the wider Wattle Range community.

 The first of the riders will start to arrive into our Council area around 8:30am in Beachport for a lunch stop around the rotunda on the foreshore. Event organisers will have portable toilets, bins and marquees set up, with the seaside community welcoming the riders into their town.

 The second rest stop will be at the Rendelsham carpark starting from around 9:30 am until 3 pm. Again organisers will be providing toilets, marquees & bins. At this stop, community groups have been organised to provide food, drinks, music & games.

 The riders will start arriving in Millicent from 11 am, with the McLaughlin Park campsite opening at 12 noon. Council staff will be working in our marquee at the campsite to encourage riders to explore Millicent and showcase the activities occurring during their stay. Riders will be looking for food, drink and activities to do in the afternoon and into the evening. To assist with providing the best experience to the riders whilst in Millicent, Council is hosting a Market & Art Fair with around 30 stalls from 2:30 through to 6:30 pm at Jubilee Park. This will be held in conjunction with the Millicent Lights-Up event, which kicks off at 5 pm. The Market & Art Fair is designed to encourage the visitors to stay and spend time in Millicent rather that return to the campsite. As part of this we welcome the local community to embrace these activities which will also include a 5m colouring-in wall paper on RSL Hall, a giant word search as well as scattered seating for the visitors to sit back and enjoy the ambiance of the Fair. Other activities planned include:

  • The Millicent Basketball Association will be hosting two feature matches of men’s and women’s basketball between Horsham v Millicent. Entry is FREE if you book prior for a counter meal, or you can pay $5 at the door. In addition, a laser-tag event will also be held at the Stadium at $15 per person for one-hour session;
  • Shearers Cook café will be hosting a gin bar and smoking grill BBQ;
  • Residents and visitors will be able to enjoy free use of Council’s Inflatable Obstacle Course at the Millicent Swimming Lake to celebrate the GVBR’s arrival in Millicent;
  • In an initiative co-ordinated by Image Millicent, colourfully painted bikes will be placed around the town;
  • 5THE FM will have an open day for people to explore the radio station with coffee and slices available for purchase;
  • The Millicent Museum and Visitor Information Centre will be open until 6pm; and
  • The Millicent Art Gallery will also be open extended hours, featuring local and interstate artists as part of the 2019 Wattle Range Art Exhibition.

 This event is a great opportunity to showcase what we have to offer in our patch and we encourage the community to support this event and offer a warm and hospitable welcome to the participants.

 Any questions, or if you require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact Tamara, Sarah or Roger on (08) 87330900.

The Great Vic Bike Ride is a fully supported, bike-riding holiday that visits unique destinations in a ten-day ride from Robe, South Australia across approximately 652km to Torquay, Victoria. All the way showcasing the breathtaking scenery and exceptional attractions both states have to offer.

This year is the 36th annual running of the event and the first time it has visited South Australia.

The event caters for riders of all ages and abilities, with meals, luggage transport and on-route mechanical assistance provided.

For more information you can visit the event website www.bicyclenetwork.com.au/rides-and-events/great-victorian-bike-ride/

On day two of their journey, riders will make their way from Robe to Millicent, calling in to Beachport for a rest stop and lunch.

Their final destination on this leg is the event campsite, which will be situated in McLaughlin Park, Millicent’s sporting complex. It is sure to be a sight to behold with up to 5,000 campers pitching tents and bedding down for the night.

The town is set to come alive as it puts on a show for its guests; a street party, community lights up event, various street vendors, displays and demonstrations all planned to make them welcome.

Up to 5,000 cyclists and support crew will have lunch in Beachport and stay overnight in Millicent on Saturday 23 November. On average each cyclist spends approximately $40 per day. In addition, many of the riders will bring their families/friends back to places they have stayed on the ride within the following year.

Businesses, community and service groups are invited to ‘get involved’ and help to cater for this large influx of visitors to the towns.

Council held an initial community meeting held in June, and since then has received a number of expressions of interest from groups and individuals who wish to participate in this amazing opportunity. Suggestions have included a Street Party, meals (dinner and breakfast), experiences and attractions, local produce, accommodation, food & wine and more.

To obtain a clearer understanding of the various activities that are being considered by the local community, we now need to confirm a list of all the planned activities. This will also allow us to coordinate the types of activities being considered for the November event.

If you intend to be involved please complete and return the form below, returning it to a Council office or via email tln@wattlerange.sa.gov.au by 31 August 2019.

An additional community meeting will be held to assist participating individuals and organisations with the correct permits and forms, as well as providing additional information to assist with the planned activities.
