A ‘Sister City’ relationship between Rockport City, Texas and the seaside township of Beachport, South Australia established in the 1980s has been rekindled recently with a visit from the Rockport City, City Attorney, Terry Baiamonte and her husband Rob.

The couple were visiting Australia to attend the International River Symposium in Canberra, ACT and had contacted the Wattle Range Council with interest to visit Beachport whilst in the country to revitalise the forgotten relationship.

Retiring Kintore Ward Councillors Ben Treloar and Craig Reilly along with Council’s Mayor Peter Gandolfi and CEO Peter Harriott hosted the pair at a dinner held in Beachport. They were also treated to a tour of the town and other key sights of the Wattle Range Council area. Highlights included the essential 4wd tour of the Rivoli Bay coast line and an early morning swim with Beachport’s local swim group the ‘Sea Urchins’.

During the visit they delivered a Proclamation from the City of Rockport which reads as follows:

"WHEREAS, Beachport, South Australia and Rockport, Texas, USA were designated as "Twin Cities" during their respective Sesquicentennial celebrations; and

WHEREAS, Beachport, South Australia and Rockport, Texas although 10,000 miles apart, share many similarities, both are vacation centres with substantial commercial and sport fishing activities and both are located in coastal areas with large livestock and agricultural operations nearby; and

WHEREAS, A special relationship exists between Texans and Australians as the result of their frontier locations and rich pioneer history; and

WHEREAS, It is the desire of the City of Rockport to perpetuate and encourage the relationship with Beachport and its citizens; and

WHEREAS, It is our further desire to make known and recognise this special relationship between our communities.

NOW, THEREFORE, I Charles J. Wax, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of Rockport, Texas, do hereby proclaim October 30, 2014 to be

BEACHPORT, SOUTH AUSTRALIA DAY

in the City of Rockport, Texas and encourage citizens to establish closer relationships with the citizens of our Twin City: Beachport, South Australia.

READ and ADOPTED by unanimous vote of the Rockport City Council meeting in regular sessions, Tuesday, August 26, 2014."

“It was fascinating to meet with Terry and Rob and learn of Rockport City and its similarities and differences to Beachport” said Council’s CEO Peter Harriott. “The Proclamation they delivered declares Beachport, South Australia Day on the 30th October 2014 and our Council will consider any suggestions as to how we respond to the Proclamation and how we may foster this Sister City Relationship.” “Rockport City has a strong Arts culture and this may be a means of engagement” he added.

Council is currently consulting with the Beachport District Development Association in order to involve the Beachport community in nurturing its relationship with its Texan counterparts.
