Wattle Range Council residents and community groups can get trailer loads of garden mulch for free at two upcoming community mulch days. As part of a Council first trial, mulch will be available at Council’s Tower Road Waste Facility, between Penola and Nangwarry.
Community groups and residents are encouraged to attend the community mulch days between 10 am and 2 pm. The first day will be held on Sunday, 14 August 2016, with a second event to be held on Sunday, 11 September 2016.
Trailers will be loaded with mulch using Council equipment and those taking advantage of the opportunity will need to bring a tarpaulin and suitable rope to secure the load before exiting the site. A disclaimer will also need to be signed on the day.
This organic material is a natural product made from the garden waste dropped off at Council’s Resource Recovery Centre from Wattle Range residents and businesses. The mulch available does not meet industry standards for a saleable mulch product and is therefore available at no cost.
“While the material is used by Council in low contact areas such as parklands around the district, there is ample supply to meet wider community needs” said Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Ben Gower.
As the organic material may contain plant seed, sharp and splintery objects, dusts and allergens, Council strongly recommends the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling this material. PPE should include heavy duty gloves, long sleeved shirt and pants, safety glasses and dust mask or other respiratory aids.
The community mulch days are intended for community and domestic use and are not aimed at commercial enterprises.
If the two trial days are successful, the idea will be considered for other locations.
