Council reminds pet owners of designated ‘Dog Free Zones’

14 February 2017

Dog owners face the risk of a fine if they take their dogs into designated dog free zones.

This follows reports of dogs in number of dog free venues within the Council area.

Council held public consultation held early in 2014 where the decision was made to make a number of areas dog free including the Penola Playground and Skate Park area, Penola Pool, Tantanoola Playground, Southend Playground, Millicent Swimming Lake, Millicent Domain Playground, and Beachport’s Susan Wilson Memorial Playground.

Reports that dogs are being taken to these areas have been made to Council. As a reminder signage is being installed at the entrances to Millicent’s Swimming Lake, with signs at the other locations to follow.

“The entire Swimming Lake precinct is dog free,” Director Development Services Steve Chapple said. “Council staff will be patrolling this area in the coming weeks and may fine people found there with their dogs.”

Dog owners are asked to observe the ban and are reminded that it is an offence to take a dog into a dog free zone attracting a fine of $187.50.
