A robust crowd of almost 200 people gathered in Millicent today in support of the towns’ Saleyards facility. Graziers, agents, business owners and residents filled the venue to capacity, attending a public meeting called by Council following a decision made at its January meeting to consult with stakeholders seeking solutions to the current operating deficits of the yards.
Strong community support was heard by Council’s Mayor Des Noll, elected members and executive staff who were engaged in what was a passionate but positive conversation about the future of the facility.
Many community members contributed to the public debate offering information and anecdotes supporting the social and financial benefits of the Saleyards to the wider community. Suggestions were also made regarding possible measures for Council to investigate in its endeavour to improve the long-term sustainability and therefore the economic impact to the broader Wattle Range community. A small group of stakeholders have undertaken to participate in a subsequent meeting to further discuss and explore these options with Council staff.
Mayor Des Noll was impressed by the attendance at the public forum and the overwhelming sentiment of those in attendance and is looking forward to further debate in the Council chambers in the ensuing weeks.
