Wattle Range Council will again support local Lions Clubs and community organisations in hosting complimentary breakfast celebrations across the Council region this Australia Day.

Official presentations to recipients of the Young Citizen of the Year, Citizen of the Year & Active Citizen Awards will form part of the program at the Australia Day breakfasts held in Beachport, Kalangadoo, Millicent & Penola, starting at 8 am on Tuesday, January 26.

“Each ceremony will honour the Australia Day award recipients from their respective Wards,” Mayor Des Noll explained. “We invite all Wattle Range residents to come out, bring along a picnic rug or chair, and celebrate the contributions of these special Australians on our National Day,” he said.

Mayor Noll went on to say: “We are also very fortunate to have SA journalist and Australia Day Ambassador, Samela Harris attending the 2021 Penola event.”

“Samela has a newspaper career spanning three continents and forty years, seeing her honoured in the Journalist’s Hall of Fame. She has deep and devoted links to the Limestone Coast and special connections to the Penola region. We look forward to extending our hospitality to Samela for the day.”

“The Beachport event will be particularly special for ten 'soon-to-be Australians' who will all make the Australian citizenship pledge during the official proceedings. We welcome the community to support them in this great step,” said Mayor Noll.  The conferees will be the first to do so on Australia Day in Wattle Range for 10 years. Mayor Noll and Member for MacKillop, Nick McBride MP will both attend the Beachport celebration.

The location of the breakfast events are as follows:
Millicent - Jubilee Park, North Terrace, Millicent
Penola - War Memorial Park, Church Street, Penola
Beachport - Lagoon Reserve, Sommerville Street, Beachport
Kalangadoo - Kalangadoo Institute, Eliza Street, Kalangadoo

In the afternoon, the Southend Progress Association will host a free gathering on the Western beach from 2 pm with a BBQ and games, which is also proudly supported by the Council.

Grant funding from the National Australia Day Council has been received by Council to assist with COVID-19 compliance at these events. Those attending should keep in mind social distancing and personal hygiene practices and are asked to consider bringing their own chair or rug to assist with this.
