Wattle Range Council’s free Community Mulch Days have continued to show high levels of support by local residents with Penola hosting their first for the year on July 19.
Dozens of cars visited the Abbey Road facility to take advantage of the first session, 20 individuals returning with their trailers for more mulch on the same day. Participation numbers were a record high with 44 trailers of mulch collected over the day, compared to an average of 26 trailer loads per mulch day in 2019.
Millicent’s July mulch day also shared high participation from residents. This was second mulch day for the town this year and saw residents collect 109 trailer loads from the Saleyards Road site.
Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Ben Gower was pleased to hear of the program’s popularity: “It is great to see this waste initiative continuing to grow. It is anticipated that scheduled mulch days being held in both townships until the end of November will see even higher participation as the weather improves,” he said.
“All mulch collected during these community collection days prevents the need for this organic material to be sent to landfill, where it would produce greenhouse gases. This initiative re-purposes the green waste and recovers the resource as mulch to add organic material back into the soil, retain water and reduce weed growth in gardens,” Mr Gower added.
Millicent will host the next Community Mulch Day on Sunday, 16 August 2020. The next scheduled Mulch Day for Penola is on Sunday, 27 September 2020.
