Residents of Beachport are encouraged to share their thoughts on places of heritage significance in the town.
Council has commissioned a Heritage Survey of the town of Beachport and the surrounding district. The survey is being undertaken by Elizabeth Little of Grieve Gillett Andersen Architects in association with historian, Dr Peter Bell.
Elizabeth and Peter will be visiting the area again over the weekend of March 11 & 12, and are keen to meet with local community members to learn more about places that may be of value to the residents of the Beachport area.
Community members are invited to attend a consultation session on Sunday 12 March from 2.00 pm at the Beachport Visitor Centre. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to register their interest by contacting Council’s Planning Officer, Peter Whiting, by email at email@example.com.
Mr Whiting said he strongly encourages people who would like to make suggestions for possible heritage listings to come along.
“Though the criteria and protocols for securing a heritage listing is quite specific, it is a great opportunity to talk face to face with the heritage specialists and explore suggestions or have questions answered,” he said.
Places of heritage value may be buildings, structures, monuments, landscape features, sites, grave markers, or other sites. The value of a place may relate to its age, through a connection to a person or event, or because of a special association for the local community. A place may be of value relating to its current or former use, or for less tangible associations and meanings, and it may hold different values for different individuals or community groups.
Members of the community are also encouraged to bring any historical photographs or documents they think may be of interest to the session.
Should you have any questions regarding the project, please do not hesitate to contact Peter Whiting at Wattle Range Council on (08) 8733 0900.
Following the consultation, the Beachport & Surrounds Heritage Committee will be meeting from 4.30 pm to 5.15 pm in the back room of the Beachport Hotel. The public are welcome to attend.
