Wattle Range Council residents and community groups are reminded that this Sunday will be the third of four community mulch days to be held in Millicent and near Penola.
Interested individuals and community groups can get a trailer load of garden mulch free of charge between 10am and 2pm from the Millicent Saleyards. The final community mulch day for this round will be held at Council’s Tower Road waste facility in Penola on Sunday 25 June 2017.
“We are thrilled with the success of these free mulch days and are pleased to be able to give the recycled material back to the community” said Director of Engineering Services, Peter Halton.
“Following the success of the program at Tower Road last year, we have doubled the number of days and included the Millicent location. The days held in May were well supported, with quite a few residents attending at both Millicent and Tower Road.”
The mulch is made from the organic material dropped off by Wattle Range residents and businesses at Council’s Resource Recovery Centres. The material is mulched by a contractor several times a year and stored at several sites. The organic material available does not meet industry standards for a saleable mulch product, so Council has decided to make it available for community and domestic use at no cost.
Trailers are loaded with mulch using Council equipment and those taking advantage of the opportunity will need to bring a tarpaulin and suitable rope to secure the load before exiting the site. A disclaimer will also need to be signed on the day.
As the organic material may contain plant seed, sharp and splintery objects, dusts and allergens, Council strongly recommends the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling this material. PPE should include heavy duty gloves, long sleeved shirt and pants, safety glasses and dust mask or other respiratory aids.
Outside of the community mulch days, Council also allows residents to load up their own trailers from the Millicent and Penola Resource Recovery Centres at no charge when mulch is available at the sites.
