Fire Danger Season Approaches

Fire Danger Season Approaches

14 November 2017

Residents are advised that the Fire Danger Season for the Lower South East will commence on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 and will be in place until April 30, 2018. Council also reminds all landholders of their responsibility to ensure fire prevention measures have been taken to prevent the outbreak or spread of fire to or from their property throughout this time.

Council inspectors have commenced inspections of properties within the region for the level of preparedness and height of grass and undergrowth, with all towns and settlements being assessed. Over 650 landowners have been issued with notices requiring fuel hazard reduction works be undertaken on their property. It should be noted that should these owners not comply, Council will take action necessary to ensure works are completed.

Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Ben Gower warned of the need to prepare your properties ahead of the Fire Danger Season. “Make sure you know your responsibilities, and take positive action to prepare for fires by taking simple steps around your home. Fuel reduction is one of the most important preparations you can undertake” Mr Gower said.

All residents are advised to have a bushfire action plan prepared for their property and should practice their plan as a family so that in the case of an emergency they are all prepared to implement the plan. Template bushfire action plans are available on the SA CFS website.

Additionally, the CFS has identified areas within the community that offer different levels of relative safety from bushfires. These areas are categorised as “Bushfire Safer Places” or “Last Resort Refuges”. It is important that communities understand these categories, know where they are located and what exposure risks are associated with using them during a bushfire. This information can be found on the CFS website www.cfs.sa.gov.au/site/prepare_for_a_fire/bushfire_safer_places.jsp
