Empowering Able Young Leaders

Empowering Able Young Leaders

Based on the Wattle Range Council's values of Trust, Teamwork and Fun we are very excited to offer at no cost Empowering Able Young Leaders, a program for youth with disability.

The program is aimed at 16 - 30 year olds who are either at school or school leavers or in the workforce.

The purpose of this project is to provide young people with disabilities with opportunities that will enable them to become stronger and more confident community leaders.

The program schedule is outlined below:

SessionDate
Workshop 1: Self-Discovery TBC
Workshop 2: Planning for the FutureTBC
Workshop 3: Communication and TeamworkTBC
Workshop 4: Advocacy, Access and InclusionTBC

Sessions will generally be held from 10 am to 2 pm, with the exception of the final session which will be held from 5 pm to 8.30 pm.

Delivery of the program is an initiative that can be measured as an action in the State Disability Inclusion Plan (Inclusive SA) in helping young people with disability become better decision makers.

Background

The program supports the principles of the Wattle Range Council Disability Inclusion Plan (DAIP).

In discussions with the NDIA, the Local Government Association of SA identified a need for the involvement of young people with disability in supporting the implementation of DAIPs. When funding was made available under the Information Linkages and Capacity (ILC) Building Program, the LGA saw an opportunity to develop a coaching and mentoring program. At this time the LGA discovered an existing leadership program was also ILC funded and so was able to partner with the Youth Disability Advocacy Service in Victoria to deliver the program in South Australia.

Participants are welcome to bring along a support person, carer, social worker, parent or caregiver to assist in being able to participate in the program.

This is a free course held over 4 full day workshops. Each participant needs to make the commitment to be able to attend all four workshops, which will enable them to get the most from the course, complete the program, receive a certificate (which looks great on your resume) and gain satisfaction.
