Fire Prevention
Preparing your property for the fire danger season helps protect your family, home, neighbours and our Wattle Range community.
Reducing fuel around your property is one of the most effective ways to reduce bushfire risk.
For bushfire preparation advice, visit the Country Fire Service (CFS) Bushfire Ready website.
Your Responsibilities
Under the Fire and Emergency Services Act 2005, landowners are responsible for taking reasonable steps to reduce fire hazards on their property.
Residential Properties
If your property contains a dwelling, Council requires owners to::
- Keep grass and flammable undergrowth below 10cm.
- Prune tree branches away from buildings.
- Remove leaf litter, fallen branches and other combustible materials.
- Remove rubbish and waste that could fuel a fire.
- Clean gutters and roof areas regularly.
Vacant Township Allotments
For vacant land within townships surrounded by residential properties:
- Maintain grass, weeds and other flammable undergrowth below 10cm across the entire allotment.
Larger Township Properties
For township allotments greater than one hectare:
- Establish a 10-metre-wide fuel break around the property boundary.
- Maintain a fuel-reduced area within 20 metres of any dwelling.
- Maintain flammable undergrowth below 10cm.
Rural Living Allotments
- Establish a 5-metre-wide fuel break around the property boundary.
- Maintain a fuel-reduced area within 20 metres of any dwelling.
- Maintain flammable undergrowth below 10cm.
These standards should be maintained throughout the Fire Danger Season.
Property Inspections
Council undertakes inspections each year, generally during October and November, depending on seasonal conditions.
Properties are assessed for compliance with fire prevention requirements. Where action is required, property owners may receive a notice outlining work that must be completed.
If required work is not undertaken, Council may arrange for the works to be completed and recover the associated costs from the property owner. Fines may also apply.
Fire Prevention is a Year-Round Responsibility
Fire prevention is not just a summer task. Landowners are encouraged to keep properties clear of fire hazards throughout the year, particularly during the Fire Danger Season.
Taking action early helps reduce the risk of fire spreading and improves community safety.
