Community invited to learn more about Beachport Coastal Adaptation Strategy

Wattle Range Council is inviting the Beachport community to attend an upcoming information session to learn more about the draft Beachport Coastal Adaptation Strategy and gauge community sentiment on how coastal risks should be managed into the future.

The information session which will be led by engineering consultants FSC Range will be held at the Beachport Recreation Centre on Thursday, 30 April from 6pm.

Following several years of research, modelling and consultation with the community and other key stakeholders, Council is now ready to present the draft Strategy, developed in partnership with FSC Range.

The information session will outline what the Strategy covers, including a long‑term plan for managing coastal hazards such as erosion and inundation (both permanent and temporary) through to the year 2100. It will also explain how potential adaptation actions may be triggered by future coastal events.

“We encourage the community to come along to the session or view the presentation online so they can understand what the strategy covers and the long‑term plan for the Beachport coast,” Council’s Director for Engineering, Peter Halton said.

“Council is keen to hear directly from the community about their sentiment towards managing risks associated with these trigger points, which may result from rare events such as a one‑in‑100‑year storm or long term erosion occurring over time. We are interested in hearing the communities’ opinion on the adaptation pathways which have been proposed for managing these hazards,” Mr Halton said.

“Coastal adaptation is a long‑term process. These kinds of projects don’t happen overnight, and this Strategy represents another important step forward in planning for the future of the Beachport coastline, including supporting future grant applications to the State and Federal Governments.”

Members of the community are encouraged to attend the session, ask questions and provide feedback to help inform how Council responds to coastal risks as they arise.

As this strategy has a long term impact, the community will be given a number of opportunities to share feedback on the draft Strategy and adaptation actions prior to its final adoption.
