Beachport resident Jill Preston has been named the Wattle Range Council Senior of the Year for 2026, recognised for her decades of volunteer service, community leadership and commitment to supporting others.

Mayor Des Noll presented the award at the Celebrate Seniors Awards Ceremony, held as part of Seniors Week celebrations.

Nominated by the Beachport Bowling Club, Ms Preston has been an accomplished bowler and dedicated member of the club for more than 30 years. During this time, she has contributed in many volunteer and leadership roles including Tournament Manager, Women's Competition President, selector, team organiser, fundraiser as well as playing an active mentoring role. Her service has played an important role in supporting the club's ongoing success and community spirit.

Beyond the bowling green, it is her service to community that has had a lasting impact. Ms Preston has volunteered with Meals on Wheels and regularly assists local residents travelling to access essential services and medical appointments, helping ensure community members remain connected and supported.

Mayor Des Noll said Ms Preston's commitment to community service made her a deserving recipient of the award.

"Individuals such as Jill help make our community more connected and resilient," Mayor Noll said.

In opening the event, Council's Director Development Services, Emma Clay, acknowledged the vital role seniors play across the region.

"Our seniors are our volunteers, carers, committee members, neighbours, mentors, historians, sporting club members and community leaders," Ms Clay said.

"They carry enormous knowledge and experience, but just as importantly, they are so often the people who make the everyday things happen."

The Senior of the Year Award forms part of Council's Celebrate Seniors Program, recognising older residents who make a meaningful difference through community service, leadership, volunteering and personal achievement.

More than 80 people attended the awards ceremony at the Civic and Arts Centre. Guests enjoyed entertainment from Mark Moffatt and local band "Out of Order", bringing to a close a successful week of Seniors Week activities.

The 2026 Seniors Week program featured Golden Games, Generation Explore Tours, documentary screenings, morning teas and community events celebrating the valuable contributions, experiences and stories of older residents. Following a change to the Program in 2025, events are now also held throughout the year and not just during the October Seniors Week celebrations.
