Wattle Range Council is preparing to celebrate the valuable contributions of older residents with a week of activities and events during Celebrate Seniors Week this October.

The annual celebration aligns with South Australia's Week of Ageing Well and recognises the experiences, stories, achievements and ongoing contributions of older people in our communities.

Wattle Range Council’s Director Development Services, Emma Clay said the week provides an opportunity to bring people together while celebrating older residents.

"This year Celebrate Seniors Week will feature fun, intergenerational activities and uplifting events that highlight the experiences, stories and achievements of our older residents," Ms Clay said.

"We encourage people of all ages to get involved, connect with one another and help recognise the important role older residents play across Wattle Range."

The initiative is proudly supported by the Celebrate Seniors Working Party, a passionate group of community volunteers dedicated to acknowledging the efforts and stories of older residents across the district.

This year's program includes Golden Games, Generation Explore Tours, screenings of the Geltwood documentary, morning teas and a range of activities designed to connect generations and celebrate ageing as a valued and vibrant part of community life.

Council is also proud to partner with local community groups and volunteers, who will deliver a range of activities and experiences for older residents. Events including the Orchid Show, Museum Open Day, Table Tennis sessions and a Dementia Information Talk are delivered by the community for the community. Local service clubs also are contributing, with the Millicent Lions Club once again providing their popular free donuts at some events.

In response to community feedback, Council introduced a refreshed format in 2025, shifting from a month-long program to a dedicated Celebrate Seniors Week, while continuing to offer a program of seniors-focused events throughout the year.

As part of the celebrations, the recipient of the 2026 Senior of the Year Award will be announced on Friday, 9 October.

The award recognises an older resident who makes a meaningful difference through community service, leadership, volunteering or personal achievement.

Nominations are now open and close on Friday, 25 September 2026. Wattle Range Council is encouraging community members to nominate a local senior whose efforts have made a positive impact on others.

"Nominating someone for the Senior of the Year Award is a meaningful way to recognise and celebrate the vital role seniors play in our community," Ms Clay said.

"It's an opportunity to acknowledge their contributions, inspire others and highlight the value of community service and community involvement."
