Wattle Range Council is inviting the Penola community to have its say on the future design of Queen Street between Julian Street West and South Terrace.

The proposed upgrade will address longstanding drainage and access issues along the street, including regular minor flooding, damage to road edges and verges, and the absence of a formal footpath.

While Council has committed to improving underground stormwater drainage and constructing new kerb and channel infrastructure to help reduce flooding, community feedback will play an important role in shaping the final street layout.

Director Engineering Services, Peter Halton, said Council is keen to understand what matters most to those who use the street every day.

"Queen Street has a limited road reserve width, which means there are trade-offs to consider when deciding how space is allocated," Mr Halton said.

"We want to hear from the community, particularly residents, property owners and businesses along Queen Street, about what they value most when it comes to the future design of the street."

Council is seeking feedback on how available space should be balanced between pedestrian access, parking, traffic movement, verge space and trees or landscaping improvements.

Mr Halton said there is no single right answer, and community input will help Council understand local priorities before a preferred design is selected.

"Some people may prioritise safer pedestrian access, while others may place greater importance on parking, verge space or maintaining the character of the street," he said.

"This consultation is an opportunity for the community to help shape the final design and ensure Council understands the different ways Queen Street is used."

Following consultation, Council will consider community feedback alongside technical requirements when developing the final design.

Initial drainage improvement works which are already scheduled will commence in 2027.

Community members can complete the online survey at www.engage.wattlerange.sa.gov.au/queen-street or provide a written submission.

Feedback closes at 10am on Monday, 16 November 2026.
