Are you passionate about local issues and want to make a difference to your community?

Young people across the Wattle Range Council area are being encouraged to put their hands up, with Expressions of Interest now open for the 2026 Wattle Range Youth Advisory Council (YAC).

The Youth Advisory Council is a group of 11 passionate young people aged 12 to 24 who are selected to represent the voices of their peers and advocate for youth priorities within Council. Endorsed by the Council’s Elected Members, the YAC plays a vital role in strengthening connections between young people and local government.

Mayor Des Noll said the Youth Advisory Council provides an important platform for young people to be heard and involved in shaping their community.

“The Youth Advisory Council ensures that the perspectives, ideas and concerns of young people are considered in Council decision-making,” Mayor Noll said. “It is encouraging to see young people actively engaged in local issues and contributing to projects that have a real impact across the community.”

Members of the Youth Advisory Council contribute to Council projects across a wide range of areas. The group provides valuable insight into youth needs and helping to create a more inclusive and youth-friendly community.

"Being part of the YAC has given me the opportunity to speak up as a young person about issues that matter to me, in a space surrounded by other young people with similar interests who are also there to feel seen, heard, and represented within the community’, said former Wattle Range Youth Advisory Council member, Sienna Sutherland.

“It has also given me the chance to gain insight into how local government works behind the scenes, I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wanted to join,” she said.

Nicole Croser, Council's Manager Community Development works closely with the members and said that the youth don’t need experience, confidence, or a loud voice to be part of the Youth Advisory Council.

“We welcome young people exactly as they are. YAC is a supportive space where you can learn, build confidence at your own pace, and share your ideas when you’re ready. Some of our strongest contributions come from young people who weren’t sure they belonged at first — and that’s completely okay.”

Participation in the Youth Advisory Council offers young people opportunities to develop skills. Members also attend Council meetings and have the opportunity to help create and influence events, programs and projects for young people across the region.

Mayor Noll said the Youth Advisory Council continues to be an important advisory body for Council.

“The insight provided by the Youth Advisory Council helps ensure Council remains responsive to the needs and aspirations of young people,” the Mayor Noll said. “We strongly encourage young people who are passionate about their community to apply.”

Expressions of Interest for the 2026 Wattle Range Youth Advisory Council will close 8 March 2026. Young people aged 12 to 24 who live, work or study in the Wattle Range Council area are encouraged to apply.
