Wattle Range Council is encouraging community members to attend upcoming sessions to learn more about the Draft Beachport Local Heritage Code Amendment and provide feedback during the consultation period.

The proposed amendment seeks to recognise and protect 19 places of local heritage significance in the Beachport area by adding them to the Planning and Design Code as Local Heritage Places.

Currently, there are three State Heritage Places in Beachport: the Jetty, Customs House and Museum.

The proposed amendment follows a review and survey of the Beachport community which began in 2016. The review was undertaken in partnership with the Beachport Local Heritage Committee, which was established to identify places of local heritage significance in Beachport.

If a site becomes a Local Heritage Place, it is recognised for its heritage significance and protected through the Planning and Design Code. This does not necessarily prevent owners from maintaining, renovating or using their property, but some works that affect heritage features may be restricted or require planning approval.

For neighbouring properties, future development proposed on nearby land will be assessed to ensure it does not unreasonably impact the heritage values or setting of the Local Heritage Place.

Director Development Services, Emma Clay, said the drop-in sessions are an important opportunity for residents to learn more about the proposal and ask questions before providing feedback.

"Local heritage places help tell the story of our community and contribute to the character and identity of Beachport," Ms Clay said.

"We encourage all interested community members, particularly property owners and residents living in or near a proposed Local Heritage Place, to drop in to a session, learn more about the proposal and provide feedback."

Representatives from Future Urban, Council's planning consultants, will be available at both sessions to explain the proposal and answer questions.

Drop-in sessions will be held at the Beachport Cinema on Wednesday, 11 November 2026 from 4.00pm to 6.30pm and Thursday, 12 November 2026 from 10.00am to 1.30pm.

The sessions are informal drop-in opportunities and no registration is required.

Information about the Draft Code Amendment, supporting documentation and feedback options are available through Engage Wattle Range. Hard copies can also be viewed at the Wattle Range Council Service Centre and Visitor Information Centres.

Community feedback will help inform Council's Draft Beachport Local Heritage Code Amendment before it is referred to the Minister for Planning for a decision.

Consultation closes at 11.59pm on Sunday, 29 November 2026.
