At the Ordinary Meeting of Council on Tuesday 12 August, Elected Members approved the demolition of the former Millicent Council Office on George Street, Millicent and resolved to inform the community of its decision.
At the Meeting $300,000 was also referred to the 2025/26 budget to undertake the demolition and landscaping of the site.
The decision follows a report presented to Council seeking their direction on the future of the former Council Office. The report is included in the Meeting’s Agenda documents Ordinary Meeting - 12 August 2025.
The former Council office is surplus to Council’s needs and can either be refurbished and offered for lease; mothballed; or demolished. It cannot be sold as it is located on public land.
The report includes a thorough assessment of the building and summarises that it does not meet a range of current building standards. A building condition assessment has been prepared by Mr Daryl Sexton to assist Council in its deliberations. Mr Sexton was appointed to complete this work due to his extensive experience as an accredited building surveyor (since 1992), qualified civil engineer (since 1978) and a 45-year technical career that included executive management appointments at Glenelg Shire (1988 to 1994) and the City of Mount Gambier (1994 to 2017).
The former Council Office was originally built in the 1930’s as a school and has been repurposed as both a Library and Council Office since the Department for Education vacated it in the 1970’s. The building is vacant once again following the Council’s transition to its newly constructed Council Service Centre at 12 North Terrace Millicent.
