Beachport Playgrounds

Susan Wilson Memorial Playground

This playground site was previously part of the old Railway Precinct. The playground was named in honour of Susan Wilson who ran a small shop on the corner of Beach Road and Lagoon Road (near Bompas Lawn). It was built in the opening decades of the 20th Century and was constructed from corrugated iron. Susan supplied holidaymakers with hot water which was unavailable elsewhere in town. The water was supplied from White’s Fountain (the well situated at the centre of the current roundabout). This fountain was paid for by Captain White, the then Chairman of the Council.  The hot water came from two portable copper boilers that Susan Wilson tendered at the front of her shop. In addition to the hot water, Susan also sold her famous pies, pasties and saveloys along with fish, crayfish, and lollies for the children. The children always came away with much more than their penny bought and it was this generosity towards the children that prompted the Council to name the playground after her.
